Shin bang — the bruising ache on the front of the lower leg from the boot tongue — affects skiers across all ability levels. The common assumption is that you get tougher, or pad over it. Neither addresses what's actually happening.
What shin bang is — and what it isn't
Shin bang is the repeated impact of the lower leg against the front tongue of the ski boot. It typically develops into a deep bruising sensation by mid-morning of a ski day, and can become severe enough to cut a session short. In mild cases skiers adapt their technique, avoiding the full forward flex that triggers contact. This adaptation reduces performance and doesn't solve the problem.
It isn't, as often assumed, a stiffness problem or a buckle tension problem. Tightening the top buckle more aggressively can temporarily reduce forward movement, but it also restricts normal flex and creates secondary pressure across the shin — making the situation worse, not better.
The biomechanical cause
Shin bang originates from heel instability. When the heel isn't properly seated and held in the heel cup, it has the freedom to lift slightly during the forward lean phase of a turn. This causes the shin to drive into the boot tongue rather than the force being absorbed through proper contact with the back of the boot. The repetition of this across dozens of turns creates the bruising pattern that defines shin bang.
Contributing factors include: a boot with too much forward lean angle for the skier's anatomy, a ramp angle that pitches the skier too far forward, or insufficient arch support causing medial collapse and secondary heel movement.
How professional fitting eliminates shin bang
At Surefoot Verbier, we approach shin bang as a positioning problem. The fitting begins with an assessment of heel seat stability — specifically, how much the heel is lifting in the boot under normal flex. We then work on two levels simultaneously.
First, CAD/CAM milled orthotics are produced that support the arch in its neutral position, preventing the medial collapse that allows heel lift. With the arch supported correctly, the heel cup engagement becomes consistent, and the shin-tongue contact pattern is broken.
Second, where necessary, we adjust the boot's forward lean and ramp angle to match the skier's ankle geometry. A boot pitched too far forward for a given skier's proportions will always drive shin bang regardless of what the insole does — the angles have to match the anatomy.
