If your toes are hitting the front of your ski boot shell, the instinctive response is to buy a larger boot. In almost every case, that's the wrong answer — and it makes skiing harder.

Why toes press forward in a ski boot

The foot slides forward inside a boot for one of two reasons: the heel is lifting, or the foot is being pitched forward by the ramp angle of the boot. A larger boot gives the foot more room to migrate — which means the heel lifts even more freely, the forward slide is less constrained, and now you also have lateral play in the shell. In a properly fitted ski boot, the heel is seated firmly in the heel cup, the arch is supported in its neutral position, and the toes have a small amount of clearance from the shell — around 5–10mm. This allows the toes to flex naturally without hammering against hard plastic with every turn.
